Forgotten Zimbabwe city of Bulawayo gets a dam as elections loom
A $42-million dam a century in the making could end water shortages for more than half a million Zimbabweans — and win votes for the ruling party in an opposition stronghold that may decide next year’s presidential election. The expected completion early in 2023 of the Gwayi-Shangani dam 153 miles north west of Bulawayo is part of a strategy by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front to capture votes in the country’s long-neglected second-largest city, according to analysts. Zanu-PF has traditionally struggled to make inroads into urban areas in the province, an area dominated by the minority Ndebele ethnic group.

Air Seychelles cleared to fly through Saudi Arabian airspace to and from Israel
Air Seychelles, the national flag carrier of the archipelagic nation, has announced that it has become the first airline flying from and to the Indian Ocean to be allowed to overfly Saudi Arabia while operating its service to Israel. It was only last month that Saudi Arabia announced that it was opening its airspace to flights to and from Israel; previously, such flights had only been permitted in rare cases. The new Saudi policy is a reflection of the dramatic improvement in Arab-Israeli relations in recent years. “The granting of this airspace is very significant for the airline,” highlighted Air Seychelles acting CEO Sandy Benoiton. “The fact that the flight can now fly in a more direct manner and a higher altitude also means a reduction in fuel burn between 500 kg [and] 1 000 kg per flight. In addition to this important environmental benefit, it means the aircraft can now carry an additional 20 passengers per flight and eliminates the payload restriction previously employed.”
TNPA initiates process for possible development of greenfield Boegoebaai port
South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has initiated a preliminary process for the proposed development of a new deep-water port at Boegoebaai in the far Northern Cape near the Namibian border, which has been earmarked as a possible hub for the production and export of green hydrogen and derivative products. The State-owned port landlord has released a request for qualification (RFQ) for the design, funding and construction of the proposed greenfield port and rail infrastructure as a precursor to a possible future request for proposals (RFP).

Rail constraints costing South African miners billions of rands in lost exports
Despite bulk mineral exports being State-owned Transnet’s single biggest client base, South Africa is unable to access the full benefits of minerals exports, Minerals Council South Africa CEO Roger Baxter told delegates attending the first day of the South African Heavy Haul Association (SAHHA) 2022 conference on August 2. He said it had been a challenging last couple of years, with a deterioration in Transnet’s rail performance.
