PRASA to run charter train for Comrades Marathon
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has announced that its Shosholoza Meyl services will run a special charter train from Johannesburg to Pietermaritzburg and Durban for the Comrades Marathon on August 26 to 29, offering two packages for luxury and budget travellers. The charter service is also extended to Comrades Marathon fans, supporters and participants who want to bring their families along, as well as passengers who would like to travel to Durban but not attend the Comrades Marathon, the agency said.
South Africa-connected Irish aviation group takes full control of Belgian MRO company
Ireland-based aviation services company ASL Aviation Holdings (ASL) has announced that it had taken full ownership of Belgium-based aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company X-Air Services (X-Air). Among its range of subsidiary companies based in Europe, Africa and Asia, ASL was the primary financier and held a minority shareholding in South African aviation company Safair Holdings, and through this, a minority stake in South African low-cost airline FlySafair. ASL had owned 50% of X-Air, the latter being a joint venture between the former and French independent MRO company Sabena technics. However, the two partner groups had agreed that ASL would acquire Sabena Technics’ half-share in X-Air. The financial aspects of the deal were not being disclosed.
Cape Town to add two new MyCiTi depots in R340m project
The City of Cape Town will this month start construction of two new MyCiTi bus depots. The R340-million project forms part of the roll-out of the MyCiTi service to Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Claremont and Wynberg.
Former Transnet executives’ properties, pension benefits frozen with SIU order
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and Transnet have obtained a preservation order from the Special Tribunal to freeze five luxury properties, and pension benefits valued at about R1.8-million, linked to former Transnet executives and their spouses, pending the final determination of civil proceedings for recovery of damages or losses and disgorgement of secret profits. The SIU investigation determined that the acquisition of the properties was allegedly funded by money received from service providers contracted by Transnet. Therefore, the luxury properties constitute proceeds of unlawful activities, hence the application for a preservation order pending the final determination of the review application.
Swissport highlights appointment of women to senior positions
Independent airport ground services and air cargo handling company Swissport South Africa highlighted on Wednesday that it had recently appointed two women to its Board of Directors, with a third woman also being recently appointed as its new chief financial officer (CFO). The announcement came the day after South Africa’s Womens’ Day public holiday. The three were directors Fundiswa Sithebe and Khangi Khoza and CFO Neena Harri.
