Grindrod to post 188% earnings growth for H1

Further to a trading statement published on June 28, JSE-listed freight and logistics group Grindrod in an on August 18 release says it now expects, with greater certainty, to report earnings of between R370-million and R400-million for the six months ended June 30, compared with a R424-million loss in the corresponding six months of 2021. Earnings a share will be between 55.5c and 60c, against a loss a share of 63.1c in the prior comparable half-year period.

Transnet seeks court order compelling CRRC to release spares for 120 idle locomotives

State-owned freight logistics group Transnet has launched a High Court application through which it is seeking an order compelling China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) E-Loco Supply to release spare parts and components required to return 120 locomotives to service. Transnet said in a statement that the spare parts and components had been imported to service and maintain the 95 20E and 100 21E locomotives acquired from CRRC in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

Proposed Gautrain expansion faces heavy resistance by committee

The proposed Gautrain expansion project was harshly criticised as a vanity project, a white elephant and a waste of government finances by members of the Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport, which convened on August 16 to discuss its viability. The committee conducted a Focus Intervention Study (FIS) to investigate how the proposed expansion would address Gauteng’s public transport needs and challenges.
