Major milestone achieved

In what has been described as a major milestone and a significant boost ahead of the start of port operations, Lekki deep sea port, on July 1, 2022, took delivery of three Super Post Panamax ship to shore (STS) cranes and 10 rubber tyred gantries (RTGs) and witnessed the arrival of the first vessel to berth at the port. The cranes and the RTG equipment will be used in the container terminal, which will be operated by Lekki Freeport Terminal, a subsidiary of French container transportation and shipping company CMA CGM Group.

Airlink announces restoration of flights to Richards Bay

South African regional and domestic airline Airlink announced on Friday that it would resume flights between Johannesburg, Gauteng, and Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, on September 19. This resumption of operations is because Richards Bay Airport is now again able to support scheduled airline services, after a break of 20 months.

TNPA tests market for water desalination solutions at eight ports

The State-owned Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a request for information (RFI) for the supply of desalinated water for its eight commercial seaports. The RFI, the TNPA says, is intended to gauge market appetite to design, develop, finance, operate, maintain and transfer water desalination plants at the ports of Cape Town, Durban, East London, Mossel Bay, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay and Saldanha.

Assembly project finalised without a hitch

Heavy lifting and rigging specialists Lovemore Bros Mechanical Projects division has reached the tail end of a substantial assembly project for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions South Africa (WW Solutions), a subsidiary of global shipping and logistics solutions provider Wallenius Wilhelmsen. The project entailed the assembly of 15 wheel loaders and eight excavators, which made up part of an import shipment being managed by WW Solutions for one of its clients, a China-based heavy machinery manufacturer.

Major US airline places order for supersonic airliners

American Airlines (American), the world’s biggest carrier, has agreed to buy 20 Overture supersonic airliners from US company Boom Supersonic (Boom). The airline has also paid a non-refundable deposit on these 20 aircraft. American has further taken options for another 40 Overtures. “Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers,” explained American chief financial officer Derek Kerr. “We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers.”
