Airports Company SA is not for sale, says Mbalula
A number of prospective investors have expressed an interest in buying a stake in Airports Company SA, but the state-owned entity, which runs the country’s main airports, is not for sale, according to Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula. "ACSA is not only a strategic national asset with an important role to play in South Africa’s economic reconstruction and recovery, but also in enabling the growth of the aviation sector in Africa," Mbalula said in a statement on Friday. "It is on this basis that the government has no intention to divest the equity it holds in ACSA, in favour of private shareholding in the foreseeable future." Government owns a 74.6% stake in ACSA and the Public Investment Corporation holds 20%. The rest is held by a number of private investor groups. "While it is true that ACSA has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic as a result of travel restrictions, it remains on course on the recovery path," said Mbalula.

Industry organisation the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC), that includes Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Sumitomo, has invited the International Trade Administration Commission’s (Itac’s) publication of provisionary payments of 38.33% on unjustly traded, or discarded, bus, traveler and truck tyres imported from China for six months till March 8, 2023. The SATMC had actually used to Itac for relief versus disposed imports from China in late 2021. It said on September 9 that these provisional payments would resolve the problem of unfairly traded tires from China that “over many years have actually triggered the South African Customs Union tire market to suffer material injury that put the tyre market’s future, investment chances and indirect and direct task production at threat”.

Global air cargo demand in July decreased nearly 10% in year-on-year terms – IATA
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which is the global representative body of the airline industry, has reported that air cargo worldwide during July this year was 9.7% down, in year-on-year (y-o-y) terms, but only 3.5% below its level in July 2019, which was during the last pre-Covid-19 pandemic year. International air cargo traffic in July was down 10.2%, y-o-y. Total air cargo capacity in July was 3.6% up, y-o-y, and international air cargo capacity had increased by 6.8% y-o-y. However total air cargo capacity was still 7.8% below the figure for July 2019.
IATA reports that air passenger traffic performed strongly in July
Total worldwide air guest traffic in July this year was up 58.8% in year-on-year (y-o-y) terms, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. IATA is the representative body for the worldwide airline company industry. Air guest traffic in July had reached 74.6% of the levels taped before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. International air traffic in July was up 150.6% in y-o-y terms. The passenger numbers were comparable to 67.9% of those reported in July 2019, before the pandemic. Worldwide traffic represented 37.7% of overall air traveler traffic in July.
