The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.

Joburg Mayor commends Metrobus for completing refurbishment of 105 buses

City of Johanneburg (CoJ) and Metrobus executives on July 13 unveiled some of the 105 buses it recently refurbished to the value of R50-million. The entity started a 36-month refurbishment programme in 2019 to help address the challenge of an aging bus fleet. Some of Metrobus’ buses have been operating in excess of 12 years – the general lifetime of a public transport bus.

Poor road conditions, truck shortage boosting Serco’s repair business

Truck bodies and trailers manufacturing company Serco says the poor condition of some roads in South Africa, as well as a shortage of new trucks, is boosting its repair business. "The damage vehicles suffer owing to the poor road conditions and the challenges with sourcing new trucks owing to global supply chain shortages and delays at the country’s ports have resulted in transporters having to make their vehicles last longer. Serco has seen a noticeable increase in repair sales as a result," says Serco MD Charl Coetzee.

SAA sale part of vital reforms, Gordhan says

South Africa’s minister in charge of embattled State-owned companies gave an impassioned defense of the sale of a majority stake in the national carrier for about $3 – a deal that’s subject to a lawsuit from one of the spurned bidders. The privatization of South African Airways is a vital reform for the country’s battered economy, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, 73, said in an interview at Bloomberg’s Johannesburg office. The winning bidder — a partnership between a domestic aviation group and private equity firm — was the one left with the most credible financial backing and industry experience, he said.

Transnet re-enters international loan market with $1.5bn transaction

State-owned freight and logistics group Transnet has re-entered the international syndicated loan market for the first time in seven years with the signing of a five-year senior unsecured term loan facility of up to $1.5-billion, led by Deutsche Bank. Transnet said in a statement that the first $685-million drawdown was scheduled for July, and that the funds would be used to finance capital expansions and to refinance existing debt.

Global airline body reports strong recovery in air passenger traffic

The representative body of the global airline industry, the International Air Transport Association (Iata), has reported that air passenger traffic in May this year showed an accelerating recovery, on the eve of the peak northern hemisphere summer holiday travel season. In year-on-year (y-o-y) terms, total air passenger traffic in May was up 83.1%. International passenger traffic rocketed 325.8%. While domestic traffic rose only 0.2%, this was the result of severe travel restrictions imposed in China. Total passenger traffic this past May reached 68.7% of the levels of May 2019, which was before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. This was the highest level, compared with pre-Covid demand, achieved so far this year.
