Aveng’s McConnell Dowell awarded A$600m bridge project in Tasmania
Construction company Aveng’s subsidiary McConnell Dowell has been awarded a A$600-million contract to deliver Tasmania’s largest-ever transport infrastructure project – the New Bridgewater bridge. Located 20 km north of Hobart’s central business district, the project will replace the existing lift span bridge that was built in the 1940s and provide a new, modern bridge spanning 1 km over the Derwent river.
SAA, Kenya Airways sign codeshare agreement for African travel
South African carrier South African Airways (SAA) and Kenya national carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) have signed a codeshare agreement that opens more destinations for travel opportunities. As demand for air travel rebounds, the code-sharing agreement will see each airline sell, under its own code, flights operated by each other.
Richards Bay Bulk Terminal handles record magnetite shipment
The Richards Bay Bulk Terminal loaded 192 400 t of magnetite in a single vessel last week, as the 300-m-long MV Seacon Africa sailed for China a day ahead of schedule. This was the largest magnetite consignment in the history of the terminal’s operations.
Imperial to acquire 100% stake in J&J Group
Imperial, owned by DP World, has obtained approval to acquire 100% of the J&J Group – the largest integrated logistics operator on Mozambique’s Beira corridor. The transaction relating to the acquisition of the first tranche of shares (51%) of the J&J Group, which was announced on July 29 last year, was closed on July 18 this year.

The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.
Rolls-Royce announces hydrogen aircraft fuel project and updates on hybrid-electric power
UK-based global major propulsion and power system group Rolls-Royce announced on Monday (the first day of the 2022 iteration of the renowned Farnborough Air Show in England) that it had launched a cutting-edge programme to use hydrogen as a fuel for commercial aircraft. The company also provided an update on its development of hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion systems. The decision to launch the hydrogen power programme was not taken in isolation. It followed market research carried out by the Fly Zero team of the UK Aerospace Technology Institute (a Public Private Partnership) and by the Heathrow Airport Limited-led NAPKIN (New Aviation Propulsion Knowledge and Innovation Network) consortium. Rolls-Royce was a member of both initiatives. Both these projects established that there was market potential for aircraft fuelled by hydrogen.
Boeing forecasts global demand for 41 000+ new airliners over next 20 years
US aerospace giant Boeing released, on Saturday, its latest Commercial Market Outlook (CMO), covering the period from now until and including 2041. In it, the group forecast a global market demand for 41 170 new airliners (of all categories) and freighter aircraft during this period. These new aircraft will have a total value of $7.2-trillion. Their delivery will mean that, by 2041, the total global airliner and freighter fleet will be 80% larger than it was in 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic. Some 50% of jetliner deliveries during this time will be to replace airliners currently in service. This replacement of older with newer aircraft will improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions, thereby improving sustainability.
