TNPA eyes procurement of up to 80 MW of renewable energy for its ports

State-owned national ports operator Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a request for information (RFI) to the private sector as it intends to procure between 50 MW and 80 MW of renewable energy across its eight commercial seaports – Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Ngqura. TNPA recently carried out an internal audit, which indicated a need to stabilise the entity’s energy supply and costs, and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions at the eight commercial seaports.

The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.

IATA welcomes intergovernmental agency’s support for long-term net-zero carbon aviation

The outcome of the recent International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) High Level Meeting (in preparation for the United Nations specialised agency’s forty-first Assembly, to be held later this year), regarding net-zero carbon aviation, has been welcomed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which is the global representative body of the airline industry. The ICAO High Level Meeting made progress towards establishing a ‘long-term aspirational goal’ (LTAG) of net-zero carbon aviation by 2050. ICAO is an intergovernmental organisation, and this objective is in line with the global temperature objectives agreed by the world’s governments in the December 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.

PRASA gears up to open sections of the Western Cape’s Central line

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) will start trial operations on the Cape Town to Langa via Mutual station route, the Cape Town to Langa via Pinelands station route, and the Bellville to Ysterplaat via Lavistown station route, on the Central line corridor in the Western Cape, on Tuesday (July 26). The trial operations will determine the state of readiness to resume commuter services on the corridor.
