South Africa low-cost carrier FlySfair announced on Monday that the South African Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC) had approved the airline’s applications to operate flights to ten new destinations across Southern Africa. It already operates a twice-weekly service between South Africa and Mauritius, as well as domestic flights between Johannesburg (from and to both OR Tambo International Airport and Lanseria International Airport), Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, East London, George, and Port Elizabeth. The carrier has been authorised to operate flights between South Africa’s two main air transport hubs (Johannesburg and Cape Town) and Gaborone (in Botswana), Livingstone and Lusaka (both in Zambia), Luanda (Angola), Maputo (Mozambique) and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe). It has also received approval to implement services between Johannesburg and Bulawayo (Zimbabwe), Nairobi (Kenya) and the Seychelles, and between Cape Town and Windhoek (Namibia).

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warmly welcomed the decision, on Friday, of the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to adopt the target of net-zero carbon emissions for civil aviation by 2050 as a ‘long-term aspirational goal’ (LTAG). Global air cargo demand in August this year showed that the sector remained resilient, despite economic uncertainties, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. (IATA is the representative body of the global airline industry.) Global air cargo demand in August was down 8.3% in year-on-year (y-on-y) terms, but this was a small improvement on the y-on-y decline of 9.7% recorded in July. Regarding international air cargo demand in August, this was down 9.3%, y-on-y. Total air cargo capacity in August was up by 6.3%, y-on-y, with international air cargo capacity increasing by 6.1%. In July the y-on-y increase in total air cargo capacity had been much less, at 3.6%.
