Sanral begins immediate repairs on N12 in the North West

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says it has deployed construction teams to start with immediate work on the N12 in Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad in the North West province. In March, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula instructed the roads agency to act rapidly to address the challenge of potholes and the parts of the N12 that are in an undesirable state.

Repairs to flood-hit N2 in KZN to take between six to eight months

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) reports that work to fix Section 24 of the National Route 2 (N2) Northbound carriageway between Umzinto and Umgababa, in KwaZulu-Natal, which was closed as a result of severe flooding in April, is set to take between six to eight months. Sanral eastern region design, planning and construction manager Ravi Ronny says the far-left lane of the N2 collapsed and settled by over 1 m, moving down the embankment.

White Paper on National Rail Policy released

The release of the White Paper on National Rail Policy represents a new epoch and a decisive break with the past, which saw the  railways being used as an instrument to segregate society and give credence to a system of racial oppression, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said on May 9. On March 23, Cabinet approved the White Paper on National Rail Policy, which Mbalula says takes a holistic view of the trajectory of the development of the country’s rail system.

Nigerian airlines suspend plans to ground local flights over cost of jet fuel

Nigerian airlines have suspended plans to ground all local flights due to the soaring cost of jet fuel just hours before the move was due to take effect, the airline operators association said on Sunday. The Airline Operators of Nigeria has been under pressure from the government, consumer protection bodies and customers to shelve the planned shut down since it was announced on Friday.

OR Tambo jet fuel supply stable, emergency supply measures developed – ACSA

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is implementing several emergency measures to secure a sustainable supply of jet fuel at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), in Johannesburg, and to prevent airlines from having to cancel flights because of not being able to get fuel from their regular suppliers. Fuel supplies at ORTIA are impacted as a result of damage to Transnet Freight Rail’s (TFR’s) rail infrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal after a destructive storm on April 11 resulted in widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure.

WPIC encourages investment in platinum in Earth Day message

Industry organisation the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) is encouraging investment in and use of platinum-based technologies that are helping to support greener operations, industries and economies. In a short video marking Earth Day, WPIC chief administrative officer David Badham says platinum is in the "hydrogen sweetspot" and that growth in green hydrogen through platinum is boosting progress to net-zero goals.
