Forum set up to improve cooperation between Eskom, Transnet and domestic industrialists

A new forum comprising Eskom, Transnet and domestic industrialists is to be established to improve collaboration between the two large infrastructure-focused State-owned companies and domestic manufacturers and suppliers. The initiative was unveiled by Ministers Pravin Gordhan and Ebrahim Patel in their respective Budget Votes on May 20 and comes at a time when domestic industry is warning that inadequate and erratic demand, together with power cuts and collapsing freight logistics, pose a threat to manufacturing entities and their employees.

Intercape urges govt intervention as attacks by rogue taxi operators increase

Days after long-distance coach company Intercape went public about a violent campaign waged against the industry by rogue taxi associations, three more of its buses came under attack in Gauteng. These attacks, which all happened in the last week of April, came after Intercape appealed to President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently intervene to stop the violence directed at the long-distance coach industry.

CGA calls for Public Enterprises budget to address private sector ownership at ports

The Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) is hoping Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan will use his 2022/23 budget speech to address the challenges at South Africa’s ports. Delays and backlogs at the ports are threatening the longer-term sustainability and profitability of the citrus industry, as well as the 130 000 jobs its sustains, the association has said on many occasions.

Major US airline seeking approval for direct Washington DC to Cape Town route

On Wednesday, major US carrier United Airlines announced in Chicago, in the US State of Illinois (where it is headquartered), that it had applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for approval to operate three direct flights a week between the US capital, Washington DC, and South Africa’s legislative capital, Cape Town (South Africa being unusual in having separate legislative, executive and judicial capitals). This would be the first scheduled nonstop flight ever between these two cities. United described the institution of a direct Washington DC – Cape Town route as “long-overdue”. The airline planned to operate the service using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
