The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.

Comair suddenly suspends flights of both its airline brands, owing to lack of funds

South African private-sector airline group Comair, founded in 1946, suddenly announced on Tuesday night (the press release being timed at 8 PM) that it was suspending all flights operated by both its brands with immediate effect. Comair’s brands are British Airways in South Africa and Kulula, the latter being a low cost carrier. Ticket sales for both brands were also immediately suspended. The cause of these suspensions is lack of funding – Comair is still undergoing business rescue. The business rescue practitioners (BRPs) are of the opinion that the required additional funding will be secured; the process to raise it is currently under way. Once the funding is obtained, the airline will resume operations.

CDC, Orion Engineered Carbons celebrate sod turning festival at Coega SEZ

The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has jointly hosted a sod-turning ceremony with new global investor Orion Engineered Carbons (OEC) to demonstrate the success of the CDC’s 9 003 ha Coega special economic zone (SEZ) in the Eastern Cape as a preferred investment destination in Africa. OEC announced on May 30 that, for the first time in its history, its South African operations had started exporting products to Europe, mainly because of the global geo-economic instability caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
