The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.

US carrier starts year-round service between Cape Town and New York/Newark

On Tuesday major US carrier United Airlines inaugurated its new year-round, thrice-weekly, direct service between Cape Town and Newark Liberty International Airport, in the US State of New Jersey, which serves both the nearby New York City (in New York State) and as one of United’s hub airports. This thrice-weekly service had previously only been operated during the South African summer/US winter season. The year-round service started with a flight from Cape Town to Newark. Carrying the code UA1123, the next flight will be on Thursday, and the third on Saturday. However, thereafter, the Cape Town to Newark flights will be flown on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, retaining the flight code UA1123. The flights from Newark to Cape Town will be operated on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and coded UA1122. The service will be flown by Boeing 787-9 airliners.

KZN government aims to maintain good quality infrastructure

The KwaZulu-Natal government is committed to maintaining infrastructure and ensuring that people living in rural areas and suburbs receive the same standard of service delivery. Premier Sihle Zikalala made the announcement in uMbhumbhulu, on June 6, as part of the launch of a R187-million investment that is aimed at upgrading and rehabilitating strategic roads connecting economic areas in the eThekwini metropolitan municipality. Over 340 job opportunities will be created during the road construction and local companies will be prioritised to participate in the construction of the roads.
