Airbus adds Superjumbo jet to its growing list of airliners tested with 100% sustainable fuel
Europe-based global major aerospace group Airbus on Monday announced that it had flown its A380 Superjumbo airliner, with one of its engine using only sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The aircraft concerned was the company’s own flight test aircraft, known as MSN1. The aircraft took off from Airbus’ main base, at Blagnac Airport in Toulouse in France, at 08h43 local time, on Friday. It landed back there some three hours later.
Commodity boom remains untapped as South Africa fights rail woes
South Africa is missing out on some of the riches on offer from the commodities boom as a rail network beset by problems hobbles its exports. While coal prices recently soared to a record and iron ore is historically high, miners are being forced to stockpile supplies as state-owned Transnet SOC’s rail network buckles under issues from cable theft to breakdowns, compounded by years of corruption. Last year alone, more than $2-billion in potential coal, iron ore and chrome exports were lost, an industry group said.

JSE-listed construction materials supplier Raubex expects its earnings a share for the financial year ended February 28 to be at least 231% higher year-on-year, while its headline earnings a share are expected to be at least 250% higher year-on-year. Travel industry welcomes removal of PCR test requirements at South Africa’s borders
Several travel industry associations have welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on March 22 that lifts the requirement for vaccinated inbound travellers to South Africa to show a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Ramaphosa stipulated that travellers could now present proof of full vaccination or a negative PCR test result if they were partially or non-vaccinated.

Air Seychelles reports on its operational performance last year
Air Seychelles, the State-owned national flag carrier for the Indian Ocean archipelagic country, released its operational report for 2021 on Friday. Operating a fleet of two Airbus A320neo single-aisle jets and five Viking Air DHC-6-400 Twin Otter 19-seater twin-engined turboprop aircraft, last year was “filled with agility and resilience” stated the airline. The two A320neos carried a total of 16 121 passengers on chartered repatriation flights around the world. In the process, they flew to 20 destinations never before served by Air Seychelles, spread across Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe. In Africa, first-time destinations included Angola (Luanda), Botswana, Mayotte and Togo (Lomé). In Asia, they included Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Manila in the Philippines, while in Australasia they were Perth and Sydney. New destinations served also included Bucharest in Romania.
Transnet granted PPPFA exemption until new regulations promulgated
The National Treasury has granted State-owned logistics agency Transnet an exemption to comply with the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA) regulations. This is an interim arrangement to ensure compliant business continuity at Transnet after Treasury advised that organs of State could apply for an exemption from the PPPFA regulations.
