Alstom Southern Africa has appointed Shumani Madanda as the new CEO of the Bombela Maintenance Company (BMC). In his new role, Madanda will be responsible for strategy and operations, while he will also lead the BMC team as they explore growth opportunities for the company.

Global supply chain backlogs are showing no signs of easing and are likely to worsen for the rest of the year, leading to even higher prices of consumer and commercial goods in South Africa, warns Cargo Compass South Africa (SA) CEO Sebastiano Iorio. “At the start of this year we were hopeful that trade bottlenecks would ease this year, but they seem to be getting even more severe.”
Boeing wins another large order for its 737 MAX
Global major aircraft leasing group Air Lease Corporation (ALC) has confirmed an order for a further 32 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle airliners, the manufacturer announced on Monday. The order will include both the 737-8 and 737-9 versions of the MAX, although the numerical breakdown between the two marks was not revealed. This order is ALC’s second for the Boeing type so far this year. In February, it had contracted for 18 of the aircraft. That same month, the imminence of this latest order was signalled by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two groups. With the confirmation of this order, ALC now has an order backlog of 130 MAXs.

Air Belgium to operate seasonal flights in South Africa
European airline Air Belgium plans to operate seasonal flights to South Africa starting in September, with up to three flights each week to Cape Town and Johannesburg. The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape have welcomed Air Belgium’s plan to schedule two flights to Cape Town per week, with one direct and one triangular route from Brussels to Johannesburg and Cape Town starting later in September.

Transnet board amends supply chain policy to allow preferential procurement
State logistics agency Transnet’s board of directors has approved an addendum to its supply chain management policy to allow Transnet to include specific provisions for preferential procurement in its procurement processes, effective from March 25. The board resolved to continue applying the 80:20 and 90:10 preference point system provided for in the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act to promote preferential procurement in its processes, and demonstrating the company’s continued commitment to transformation and empowerment.

The South African coal, chrome, iron-ore and manganese mining sectors lost between R39-billion and R50-billion in export earnings last year as Transnet struggled with capacity to rail bigger volumes of these commodities to ports, says economists.co.za chief economist Mike Schussler. “To put this into context, this is about 1% of the country’s gross domestic product, and it would have added about 12.5% to the whole mining sector.”
