Transnet battling on several fronts as it works to stabilise the rail network

With plans to increase the cargo-handling capability at the Port of Durban and to ease congestion by having fewer trucks on the road near the port, Transnet needs to improve rail capacity, as well ensure the infrastructure is safe and secure. Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) container corridor managing executive Rudzani Ligege says there are plans to expand the port’s handling capacity from its current 2.9-million units a year to 11-million units a year.

Global air cargo demand continues to rise, but at a slower rate

Global total air cargo demand in February this year increased by 2.9%, year-on-year, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) has reported. International air cargo demand was 2.5% higher, over the same period. However, the rate of growth in demand decelerated in February, down from the year-on-year figure of 8.7% recorded last December. (Iata is the representative body of the global airline industry.) Total air cargo capacity was up 12.5% in February this year as compared with February last year, but still 5.6% below the levels of February 2019. (International air cargo capacity was 8.9% higher, this past February, than in February 2021.)

Sanral prepares Amahlathi SMMEs for R63 road project

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) this week hosted an information session for small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) in Amahlathi, in the Eastern Cape, about the road improvement project planned for the R63 national road from Bhisho to the N6 national road bridge intersection. Currently in the design phase, the R750-million project is anticipated to create 200 job opportunities for the local community over 36 months. About 60 local SMMEs are also expected to benefit from the project.

ST Energies signs MoU for filling station solar solution

French fuel and energy multinational ST Energies has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Shell filling station in Worcerster, in the Western Cape, to implement a sustainable solar solution that will allow the station to achieve carbon-neutral status. The initiative is designed to deliver reliable power to filling stations using a combination of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, batteries and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) backup to keep them off the grid and operational.

Kenya Airways, SAA plan investor search for pan-African carrier

Kenya Airways and South African Airways (SAA) are planning a series of investor roadshows to help find a financial backer for a combined airline group they aim to create next year. The campaign to attract a majority investor for a holding company to be modeled on British Airways and Iberia owner IAG SA is likely to start before the end of the northern-hemisphere summer, Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka said in an interview on Thursday. Events will be staged in Africa, London and the US.

JRA, Gauteng province terminate traffic light maintenance, repair agreement

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) have agreed to end the working relationship that has seen the JRA design, install, repair and maintain traffic signals on behalf of the provincial department. The parties could not reach agreement to renew a service level agreement (SLA) that would have resulted in the agency continuing to actively maintain and repair 231 signalised intersections on provincial roads across the City of Johannesburg.
