Mavuso calls on business, govt to urgently restore transport connections in KZN
The flood damage in KwaZulu-Natal reflects a lack of application of existing regulations and poor maintenance of infrastructure, said Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busi Mavuso on April 19. In her weekly newsletter, she noted that infrastructure had failed because it had not been kept in full operating condition. Compounding this was many houses having been built illegally, while informal settlements had sprung up in low-lying areas that were particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Sanral earmarks R76m for N2 community contracts
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says it will invest more than R76-million in seven new contracts to benefit local communities that live along the N2 Wild Coast Road Project, in the Eastern Cape. The seven new subcontracting tenders that will be awarded shortly include a bush clearing project east and west of the Mzimvubu river; repairs to the R61 between Ndwalane and Ntafufu roads; repairs to the main roads through Lusikisiki; repairs to the R61 between Lusikisiki and Zalu road; repairs to the R61 between Bukazi and Flagstaff; as well as repairs to the Flagstaff town bypass and road to Holy Cross.
Transnet regains capacity at Port of Durban in wake of cyclone Issa
Following the destruction caused by cyclone Issa earlier this week, Transnet is building capacity at its various Durban terminals that were impacted by severe weather and flooding. Sasol joins consortium to pursue carbon dioxide conversion to aviation fuel
Chemicals and energy company Sasol has joined an international consortium of industrial and academic project partners, known as Concrete Chemicals, in an effort to combine its technical knowledge with cement producer Cemex and renewable energy company Enertrag. Concrete Chemicals is focussed on climate-neutral cement production by converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by using hydrogen, thereby presenting an opportunity for CO2 reduction in both sectors.
Operations suspended at Port of Durban after heavy rains, Richards Bay operations curtailed
State-owned logistics group Transnet suspended operations across its Durban Terminals sites from 19.30 on April 11 following disruptive weather conditions in KwaZulu-Natal this week that damaged road infrastructure leading to the Port of Durban and impacting access to harbour terminals. Rail lines in certain parts of the province are operating at limited capacity as a result of flooding, while Transnet Freight Rail’s engineering teams assess the extent of the damage.

Transnet prepares to resume locomotive procurement to close gap left by halted 10-64 programme
Transnet CEO Portia Derby has confirmed that the State freight logistics group is preparing to procure a significant number of locomotives again, after having halted purchases under the “irregular and unlawful” R50-billion ’10-64’ programme. Derby tells Engineering News that, while a settlement agreement has been reached with General Electric, processes are still under way to secure settlements with China North Rail, China South Rail and Bombardier Transportation.
GED Africa, DRC finalise 25-yr infrastructure development concession agreement
Project management firm GED Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Ministry of Infrastructure and the Agence Congolaise des Grands Travaux (ACGT) have finalised the 25-year concession agreement outlining the infrastructure development requirements of the DRC segment of the GED Africa Route. The GED Africa Route project is a regional corridor development initiative includes the upgrade and greenfield road construction from Kasomeno, in the DRC, to Mwenda, in Zambia, and a modern 345 m cable stay bridge across the Luapula river, as well as one-stop border posts in each country.
