Bill for KZN floods repair stands at almost R3bn – PRASA
The direct cost to restore passenger rail services in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) following the recent floods, stands at an estimated R2.6-billion to R2.9-billion, says the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). In addition to this, the loss of fare revenue owing to the suspension of train services is estimated at roughly R50-million.
Europe’s energy rush spurs Sasol to quicken green hydrogen plan
Europe’s scramble to find new sources of energy to reduce its reliance on Russia has given Sasol, South Africa’s biggest fuel producer, a new purpose to accelerate its green hydrogen plans. Sasol is focusing on green hydrogen — made by machines called electrolyzers that are powered by the wind and sun — in South Africa’s northwest coast. The company is doing a feasibility study that it expects to complete in two years, according to Sasol’s CEO Fleetwood Grobler.

Sanral to invest R155m in Eastern Cape roads maintenance project
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) will spend more than R150-million on a special road maintenance project between Cookhouse and Bedford in the Eastern Cape, which is expected to be completed after 18 months. The R63 national road project, valued at R155-million, will create much-needed job opportunities for local community members and small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) in the local municipalities of Blue Crane and Raymond Mhlaba, says Sanral Southern Region transformation officer Thandile Makwabe.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has asked the national government to waiver the toll fees on major transport routes in KwaZulu-Natal. Many roads in the province were damaged or washed away by the recent floods, leaving road users to pay toll fees to use the only alternative route – the N2 at uThongathi Toll Plaza and the Umvoti Toll Plaza.
CGA welcomes efforts to get Durban port, related infrastructure up and running
Industry association the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA) says it is encouraged by the work done by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Transnet and the eThekwini municipality to reopen the Durban port. The arterial Bayhead road has been partially reopened ahead of schedule, while work on the ingoing lanes is proceeding well and is expected to take a few weeks, not months, to complete.
Comair withdraws Section 189 notice – Numsa
Trade union the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) reports that it has received correspondence from airline operator Comair about the formal withdrawal of its Section 189 notice. Comair served Numsa with the Section 189 on March 1 as the airline sought to cut salaries by 15% and to reduce the medical aid benefit of its employees.
