Sinkhole on N3 disrupts traffic between Peacevale, Hammarsdale
The South African National Roads Agency Limited on May 11 advised that only one lane was open on the N3 southbound after the Key Ridge interchange after a sinkhole formed, causing major traffic congestion from Peacevale to the Hammarsdale interchange, in KwaZulu-Natal. “Two lanes, including the shoulder lane, have been cordoned off with barriers and only one traffic lane is open,” said Sanral eastern region operations and maintenance manager Dudley Mbambo.

South Africa’s decision to sell a majority stake in the country’s loss-making national airline for R51 represents an ongoing financial risk to the state as the terms were skewed heavily toward the buyer, the National Treasury said. The finer print of the deal that saw the Takatso Consortium take a 51% shareholding in South African Airways (SAA) last year represents a “contingent liability,” the Treasury said in a document emailed to Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts that was later withdrawn.

Contributions by sugarcane organisation the South African (SA) Canegrowers made up a significant portion of R225-million that was distributed to small-scale growers in January, after funds were distributed to help combat severe challenges that continue to plague the industry, including cheap foreign imports, the Health Promotion Levy (HPL or sugar tax) and the unrest in July 2021. Sanral begins immediate repairs on N12 in the North West
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says it has deployed construction teams to start with immediate work on the N12 in Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad in the North West province. In March, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula instructed the roads agency to act rapidly to address the challenge of potholes and the parts of the N12 that are in an undesirable state.
Repairs to flood-hit N2 in KZN to take between six to eight months
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) reports that work to fix Section 24 of the National Route 2 (N2) Northbound carriageway between Umzinto and Umgababa, in KwaZulu-Natal, which was closed as a result of severe flooding in April, is set to take between six to eight months. Sanral eastern region design, planning and construction manager Ravi Ronny says the far-left lane of the N2 collapsed and settled by over 1 m, moving down the embankment.

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is implementing several emergency measures to secure a sustainable supply of jet fuel at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), in Johannesburg, and to prevent airlines from having to cancel flights because of not being able to get fuel from their regular suppliers. Fuel supplies at ORTIA are impacted as a result of damage to Transnet Freight Rail’s (TFR’s) rail infrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal after a destructive storm on April 11 resulted in widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure.
