KZN taxi owners empowered to become bus drivers
KwaZulu-Natal taxi owners are now eligible to be bus owners following the signing, this week, of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and the Ithala Development Finance Corporation (IDFC) under the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environment. The initiative forms part of the Bus Industry Transformation Programme.

The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.
South African terms of trade boon provides unique opportunity for the economy
South Africa is currently enjoying a terms of trade boon, with export prices outpacing import prices, market research firm Intellidex director and capital markets research head Peter Attard Montalto said on May 25. “It’s an unusual situation, driven by metals prices and helped by the fact that South Africa is a net exporter of food at the moment. We’re seeing that, even though we have very high oil prices boosting the import basket, the export side is more than offset,” he said.

Five former Transnet officials have been arrested by the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate on Friday morning on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering. News24 has established that two of the five include former Transnet CEO Siyabonga Gama and Eric Wood from the Gupta-linked companies Regiments Capital and Trillian Capital Partners.
Port of Maputo unveils rehabilitated berths
Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi in May inaugurated 1 058 m of rehabilitated berthing area – comprising berths 6, 7, 8 and 9 – at the Port of Maputo. The berths, rehabilitated, expanded and dredged to depths of up to 16 m, are now fully operational, allowing the port to receive and load an increasing number of bigger vessels (Capesize).
‘Worst first’ road repair strategy no solution amid rapid deterioration
A lack of preventive maintenance is by far the biggest contributor to the deterioration of the South African road network, says South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) engineering executive Louw Kannemeyer. “It is purely because the infrastructure is not being maintained. And, because we don’t have a zero-maintenance design on our roads, we are seeing a rapid deterioration in the network.”

Mamabola publishes route for Phase 1 of proposed Gautrain expansion
Gauteng Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo has made public the preferred route for Phase 1 of the proposed expansion of the 80-km Gautrain system, in what is called the Gauteng Rapid Rail Integrated Network (GRRIN) project.
