Labour migration policy nearing completion, says Nxesi as truckers intensify action over …

The Employment and Labour Department is finalising policy that will help to regulate the extends to which foreign nationals can be employed in South Africa, Minister Thulas Nxesi said on Friday. His comments come as trucker drivers this week intensified their national strike against the employment of foreign nationals, blocking the N3 in both directions on Van Reenen’s Pass and at the Tugela Plaza, in KwaZulu-Natal, disrupting supply chains and freight logistics between Gauteng and the main port. Similar blockades took place on several national routes last year, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to order an InterMinisterial Committee, led by Nxesi, to address the concerns raised by truck drivers and small truck operators.

Southern African airlines in Catch-22 as costs rise amid fragile demand

To all practical intents and purposes, the Covid-19 pandemic hit Southern Africa just over two years ago. The pandemic and the measures adopted by the region’s governments to try and counter it have had a severe impact on the Southern African airline industry (and indeed on all sectors associated with it, including airports and tourism). Faced with government ineptitude, Cape Town is going it alone

As South Africa’s government struggles to provide sufficient electricity, public transport and other basic services, the country’s main tourist hub is increasingly going it alone. Cape Town, which has been led by the opposition Democratic Alliance since 2006, is forging ahead with plans to secure its own energy supply. It’s also investigating the feasibility of taking over the city’s commuter rail network — currently operated by a State-owned company — and playing a role in getting the harbor to run more efficiently. And it’s hired more than 1 000 of its own security officers to complement the work of the police force, which it accuses of doing a dismal job of fighting gang violence and other crime.

Iata wants more information on skills situation in aviation worldwide, including South Africa

The representative body of the worldwide airline industry, the International Air Transport Association (Iata), has announced that it has extended the deadline of its Global Skills Survey until June 24. So far, more than 400 air transport industry professionals had participated in the survey. Iata sees the survey as being vitally important for the future of the sector. For example, discussions at the recent Iata Ground Handling Conference (concerned with the handling of commercial aircraft at airports) had revealed (in the words of Iata Flight and Technical Operations director Stuart Fox) an “alarming shortage of talent” in that sector.
