Despite the negative impact of its recent tender cancellations, South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says it continues to improve, manage and maintain the national road network. In Limpopo, the R37 improvement project between the Modikwa mine and Burgersfort worth R616-million is under way. The project involves widening the road, providing overhead lighting and constructing four major structures and a pedestrian bridge. The existing drainage structures will also be lengthened and upgraded to accommodate the widened road profile, says Sanral communications and marketing GM Vusi Mona.

The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.
Satsa calls on Presidency to urgently intervene in licensing debacle
The South African Tourism Services Association (Satsa) has called on the Presidency to urgently intervene and declare an immediate moratorium on new and renewal applications for accreditation, operating licences and permits within the tourism sector for the sake of saving jobs and preventing the loss of thousand so livelihoods. Satsa CEO David Frost said on June 22 that the industry was in dire need of a resolution to the ongoing impasse between tourism operators and the defunct National Public Transport Regulator (NPTR), which falls under the Department of Transport (DoT), as the NPTR was failing to fulfil its mandate and was hamstringing the tourism industry.
Sasol signs agreement with aircraft company to develop sustainable aviation fuels
South African chemicals and energy company Sasol signed, on Wednesday, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German aircraft manufacturer Deutsche Aircraft, on developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technology. The MoU is specifically focused on the development of technologies for green hydrogen-based ‘power-to-liquids’ (PtL) SAF production. (PtL refers to the use of green energy sources to produce SAF.) "We are extremely excited about the partnership with Deutsche Aircraft as we take a holistic approach to climate-neutral aviation by looking at the whole value chain from fuel production up to aircraft system level,” affirmed Sasol ecoFT SVP Helge Sachs. “Joining forces between aircraft manufacturers and fuel producers is vital, if we want to ensure that aviation becomes sustainable, while ensuring the highest possible safety standards."
Zondo calls for new inquiry into how SA’s passenger rail was left on brink of collapse
The final report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture has recommended that a new probe be instituted to get to the bottom of why SA’s state-run passenger rail agency was allowed to "slide into almost total ruin". Despite dedicating 250 pages to wrongdoing and failures at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), commission chair Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said that "much about the ills at Prasa has not yet been uncovered".
