The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.
Rail infrastructure thieves sentenced to ten years
Seven criminals, found in possession of Transnet railway tracks in January, were sentenced to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to tampering with, damaging and destroying essential infrastructure. In recent years, Transnet has experienced a sharp increase involving theft of cables and railway track, and has been working with law enforcement agencies to address the issue.

This comes after Transnet Group CEO Portia Derby told Business Day that the entity would issue a tender for new locomotives in a bid to boost logistics performance for the ailing mining sector.
South Africa’s Airlink signs codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways
South African regional airline Airlink has entered a codeshare agreement with major Middle East-based international airline Qatar Airways, it was announced on Monday. This will allow the customers of both airlines to book connecting flights with a single reservation, so opening Qatar’s global network to Airlink passengers, and Airlink’s extensive South and Southern Africa network to Qatar passengers. Customers can now buy tickets under the new codeshare agreement. Actual operation of the codesharing will, subject to government authorisation, start on July 6.

FlySafair to add new routes across Africa after rival’s collapse
South African airline FlySafair plans to add at least ten new routes across sub-Saharan Africa to take advantage of a gap in the market left by the collapse of domestic rival Comair. The closely held carrier will fly to capital cities such as Nairobi, Lusaka and Maputo alongside holiday destinations including Victoria Falls and Zanzibar, according to a statement Tuesday. The company will add an initial five new planes to the fleet by early 2023, it said, without specifying a model.

TNPA embarks on ambitious R9.1bn seven-year infrastructure development programme

South Africa sued over sale of national airline in $3 deal
South Africa’s government and national airline are being sued by a little-known investment firm, which wants the sale of a majority stake in the carrier scrapped and re-run due to a lack of transparency. Maintenance of ageing road network a top priority – JRA
The deterioration of Johannesburg’s roads is a key concern in terms of the general maintenance of the city, with inclement weather, vandalism and theft, as well as ageing infrastructure, the key challenges hindering service delivery, says Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) acting road infrastructure maintenance regional operations manager Puleng Mokgohloa. The City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ’s) 13 599 km road network comprises about 12 430.47 km surfaced and 1 168.53 km unsurfaced roads.
Majority of Sanral road network exceeds design life
With 83.6% of the national road network under South African National Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral’s) jurisdiction exceeding its 20-year design life, there is increased risk of rapid deterioration during the wet season, owing to the old, cracked surfaces being susceptible to moisture ingress, says communications and marketing GM Vusi Mona. “This is clearly evident from the recent above average summer rainfall over large parts of South Africa, resulting in an increased number of potholes being reported and significant damage to roads in KwaZulu-Natal last month.”
