The board of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has instructed Sanral management to readvertise and award the R17.47-billion in tenders the board cancelled earlier in May, citing “material irregularities”, within the next four months. Speaking at a media conference in Centurion on Monday, Sanral board chairperson Themba Mhambi added that the board would recruit an independent public institution with infrastructure expertise to assist with the process to advertise and adjudicate the tenders, and to make a recommendation to the board on the winning bidders.
Congo plans border post expansion as mining trucks endure up to 60 km queues
Democratic Republic of Congo plans to expand its main border post with Zambia, a source close to its government said, to ease truck queues of up to 60 km that copper miners have faced this year due to increased production and inadequate infrastructure. The backlog of trucks at Kasumbalesa, a border town and the main exit point for metals exports from Congo, is an example of supply chain disruption that will make it harder to meet future demand for copper, essential for electric vehicles.

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has reinstalled in-road warning lights at two pedestrian crossings along Buitengracht street in Cape Town. Airlink launches new route to world-renowned tourism destination
South African private-sector regional airline Airlink has announced that it is instituting a new route, linking Johannesburg in South Africa to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The new route has been approved by the aviation authorities in both countries and the service, which will be daily, will start operating on August 15. “Victoria Falls is a jewel in the region’s tourism crown and Airlink is looking forward to re-establishing connectivity between the attraction and Johannesburg,” highlighted Airlink CEO and MD Rodger Foster. “This brand new Airlink route will be our second to Victoria Falls, which we already serve from Cape Town.”

TFR to start North Corridor maintenance shutdown on July 12
State-owned Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) will start with the annual maintenance shutdown of its North Corridor on July 12. The shutdown is scheduled for completion by July 22 and is important for TFR’s volume recovery plans for the corridor.
Iata reports ‘positive news’ for global air cargo sector in May
The International Air Transport Association (Iata), which is the global representative body of the airline industry, has reported that the air cargo sector saw an improvement in its performance during May this year. Although global air cargo demand in May was 8.3% down in year-on-year (y-o-y) terms, this was still an improvement on the y-o-y decline of 9.1% recorded in April. “May offered positive news for air cargo, most notably because of the easing of some [Covid-19] Omicron restrictions in China,” highlighted Iata director-general Willie Walsh. “On a seasonably adjusted basis, we saw growth (0.3%) after two months of decline. The return of Asian production as Covid-19 measures eased, particularly in China, will support demand for air cargo. And the strong rebound in passenger traffic has increased belly capacity, although not always in the markets where the capacity crunch is most critical. But uncertainty in the overall economic situation will need to be carefully watched.”

Transnet to invest R16.1bn in Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Saldanha ports
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) will invest R16.1-billion at the Mossel Bay, Saldanha and Cape Town ports in a seven-year capital investment programme. The capital investment programme will see R2.2-billion flow to the Port of Mossel Bay, R8.4-billion to the Saldanha harbour and R5.5-billion to the Port of Cape Town.
